Surgery

At  Ospika Animal Hospital we are able to preform a wide range of surgeries from routine spays and neuters to orthopedics.

During a surgery procedure our skilled team uses modern equipment to monitor your pets heart rate, respirations, blood pressure and oxygen saturation. Recovering after each surgery involves a snuggle with our staff and time to wake from anesthetic in a warm kennel before your pet goes.

Preparing for a surgery:

Withhold food and treats after 6pm the evening before surgery. Continue to have water available for your pet up until admission to the hospital.

Surgeries are scheduled for admission between 7:30am and 8:15am.  Please ensure the person dropping the pet off for surgery will be the primary decision maker for the pet's care. You will need approximately 10 minutes to complete the admission form the morning of the surgery.

Please Read our Surgical Consent Form for anesthesia before surgery.

If your pet is having a dental procedure, please read our Dental Consent Form before the procedure

Your pet will be under a general anesthetic for a surgery, it is the ideal time to perform additional minor procedures such as dewclaw removal, tattoo, dentistry, etc.

Surgery can be a stressful experience for you and your pet.  Please read the following articles on anesthesia, and pre-anesthetic blood testing to help you make the best decision for you and your companion. Please do not hesitate to call if you have any questions regarding your pets procedure.

Healing time will vary with each procedure, our staff will go over your pets recovery requirements at the time of their discharge from the hospital.

Ensure your pet does not lick or rub surgery site, your pet may require a cone collar to prevent licking and rubbing. It is important to have the cone on when your pet is not supervised.

Sutures and staples maybe present and will remain for 10 - 14 days. Staples and sutures will need to be removed at the clinic at no additional charge. However some sutures are absorbable and do not need to be removed, our staff will inform you when your pet is released from hospital.

Drains and bandages maybe required as part of surgery healing. It is important to keep drains clean as the do leak fluid, drains are removed after 3-5 days. Bandages will need to stay clean and dry as long as your pet is wearing them. If bandages becomes wet it will need to be removed and replaced immediately so please contact us if this occurs.
